National Night Out, which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), is a drug and crime prevention event that takes place each year at different locations all over the country, in Canada and at military bases all over the globe.
Designed to generate support for local anti-crime programs and create awareness about drug and crime prevention, National Night Out 2009 is tonight and many places in Portland and Oregon are hosting community events.
• In Ridgefield, community organizers are hosting the 5th Annual National Night Out event for the area. There will be a canned food drive and bicycle rodeo, among other things.
• At Wilshire Park in Northeast Portland, the Beaumont-Wilshire Neighborhood Association will celebrate both National Night Out and the community's Annual Picnic.
